Sunderland is located on the Northeast Coast of England with easy access to the nearby coast and countryside. There is a large indoor shopping centre, two theatres, cinema and a lively nightlife. Nearby Newcastle International Airport is within easy reach and has regular flights to the major hubs of Heathrow/Gatwick and Amsterdam. London is approximately 3.5 hours by train.

The origins of higher education in Sunderland can be traced back to 1860 when the School of Arts and Science was founded. Over the years various mergers took place increasing the size of the institution. The award of University status in 1992 coincided with the designation of Sunderland as Britain's newest city. The University of Sunderland has more than 15,000 students, and welcomes over 1,000 international students from nearly 60 countries.

A wide range of programmes is offered, from diplomas to bachelors and masters degrees; postgraduate and PhD research programmes, as well as single semester and full year programmes of study. Students have a choice of subjects from the Schools of Arts, Design and Communications; Business; Computing and Information Systems; Education; Engineering and Advanced Technology; Environmental Science; Health Sciences; Social and International Studies. Taught programmes in the University are based upon a modular structure allowing most students scope to tailor their degree to their exact requirements. Programmes typically are made up of 3, 20 credit classes per semester. All study can be fully credited to your degree programme in the USA.

The University provides a choice of high quality, purpose built halls of residence alongside refurbished older properties with over 3,000 places in university managed properties. Most rooms are single study bedrooms. The cost of living in Sunderland is generally lower than in other parts of the UK.

A fully staffed Student Services Centre provides advice on: health, finance, special needs and counselling. There is a wide choice of student societies and sports facilities include a 25-metre pool, two gymnasia, weights and fitness rooms and floodlit outdoor facilities.

Subjects taught on a semester basis are media, communications, journalism, all art and design, tourism, history, English literature, culture, politics, performance arts.
