![]() | ![]() The University stands in over 200 acres of parkland just outside the historic market town of Colchester, the oldest recorded town in Britain. London is just 60 miles away and the frequent fast train service takes just under an hour. The nearby ports of Harwich and Felixstowe make it a gateway to the rest of Europe. This small, safe and friendly university, founded in 1964, decided from the beginning to be international in character. The total student population is around 7800 of whom 2,200 are post-graduates. Both full and part year programmes of study are available and students are welcome to choose courses from the regular undergraduate programme. Assessment is normally by a combination of coursework and closed examinations. There are no exams at the end of the Autumn term but students who are only at Essex for the Autumn term are required to do extra assessed work in lieu of the examinations which take place in June. Therefore they will have to do the normal work required for the term plus an extra piece of work. International Programmes students are fully integrated both academically and socially at the University of Essex. They are treated, for academic purposes, in the same way as British students following full degree programmes – They take regular courses and are subject to the same rules concerning attendance at classes and assessment of their work. A transcript showing credit and grades is issued at the end of the course. A full orientation programme is provided in October and a shorter programme in January. The International Programmes Office assists students with course choice and other matters. All students on the International Programme are guaranteed single occupancy, self-catering study bedrooms on campus. A number of rooms have en-suite facilities and are available to full-year students at a higher rent. The University has nine general-access computer labs; there is open access for students to all computer services including email.
